Bluetooth Smart, also known as  Bluetooth Low Energy is supported in Bluetooth 4.0 and uses a new modulation mode and link layer packet format targeting low power embedded devices including smartphones, sports devices, sensors, medical devices, watches, toothbrushes, toys, IoT and more.

Bluetooth Smart Technology Training (Bluetooth low energy) training course covers the technical features behind this technology including:
  • Ultra-low peak
  • Idle mode power consumption
  • Single-mode and full dual-mode packages
  • Interoperability
  • Enhanced range
  • Enhanced security
Bluetooth Smart, defined in the Bluetooth Core Spec 4.0 operates in the ISM band (unlicensed 2.4 GHz band). At the PHY level it uses Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) with a 250 kHz offset. It transmits on one of 40 channels at 1 Mbit/sec.

The 2.4 GHz spectrum is divided  into 40 channels spaced 2 MHz apart. 37 of the channels (data channels).

Communication in low energy uses the Generic Attribute Profile (GATT).
The GATT profile is also part of the core and defined in the core specification 4.0.
